NTSB description

On November 11, 2008, at approximately 1400 central standard time (CST), a Cessna 177RG, N2526V, registered to and operated by the pilot as a 14 CFR Part 91 flight, crashed during cruise flight. Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed and a flight plan had not been filed. The airplane was substantially damaged by the impact forces and post crash fire. The commercial pilot, who was the only occupant, was fatally injured. The airplane had departed the Willow Springs Memorial Airport (1H5) Willow Springs, Missouri, en route to the San Antonio International Airport (KSAT) San Antonio, Texas.

A witness near the accident scene reported hearing the airplane fly overhead in the clouds and shortly afterwards heard the sounds of impact. A law enforcement officer at the scene reported foggy conditions with visibility less than one half mile.

The weather reported at the Mena Intermountain Municipal Airport (KMEZ) Mena, Arkansas at 1400 CST, 7 miles east of the accident site, was10 miles visibility with overcast clouds at 500 feet.

The airplane was recovered to Dawson Aircraft at Clinton, Arkansas, for continued investigation.
