NTSB description

On August 10, 2008, at approximately 1400 hours central daylight time (CDT), a Cessna 182T, N214MT, registered to 733 LLC, and operated by the pilot as a 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 91 personal flight, crashed approximately 7 miles northwest of the departure airport. Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed and a flight plan had not been filed. The airplane was substantially damaged. The private pilot, the sole occupant aboard , was fatally injured. The flight had departed the Turkey Mountain Airport (MO00), Shell Knob, Missouri on a cross country flight to the Lee's Summit Airport (KLXT), Lee's Summit, Missouri.

A witness, located one mile south of the accident location, stated that she heard a plane "really low and very loud" directly over her, but it was still in the clouds. She was looking toward the sound as the sound faded and she briefly saw an airplane come out of the clouds in about an 80 degree nose down attitude. She saw a column of smoke almost immediately after the airplane disappeared behind the tops of the trees. The eyewitness estimated the base of the clouds at the time of the accident to be about 300 feet.

Air Traffic Control radar data did not show any contacts for the flight.

An airline transport pilot who had departed westbound from the Turkey Mountain Airport less than 30 minutes before the accident reported in an interview that the visibility underneath the clouds was approximately 10 miles and he saw a few isolated thin clouds at approximately 1,500 feet mean sea level (MSL) and he encountered the base of broken to overcast clouds at approximately 2,500 feet MSL to 3,000 feet MSL. That pilot also reported the clouds to the north were darker and the bases were "ragged and spotty" with the bases of those clouds at about 500 feet above ground level (AGL).

The weather reported at the Springfield Airport (KSGF) at 1352 CDT, 21 miles northeast of the accident site was 10 miles visibility with broken clouds at 1,800 feet AGL. The area forecast current at the time of the accident for southwestern Missouri was for ceilings broken from 1,000 to 2,000 feet AGL, and broken at 5,000 feet with tops to 10,000 feet, with widely scattered light rain showers near the Arkansas border.

The aircraft maintenance logs showed the most recent annual inspection had been completed on December 5, 2007 at 438 hours total time, with an engine total time of 438 hours.

An on scene inspection of the engine and airframe did not disclose any evidence of preexisting anomalies with either.
