NTSB Factual Report

On June 6, 2017, about 1850 Alaska daylight time, a Cessna 172I airplane, N35700, sustained substantial damage following a loss of engine power and a subsequent impact with terrain at the Birchwood Airport, Chugiak, Alaska. The private pilot and sole passenger sustained minor injuries. The airplane was registered to and operated by the pilot, as a visual flight rules (VFR) flight under the provision of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a personal flight when the accident occurred. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan had been filed. The flight departed from Sixmile Lake Airport, Anchorage, Alaska at about 1545.

During a telephone conversation with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigator-in-charge (IIC) on June 6, the pilot reported that the route of the flight went to the Knik Glacier area and was to terminate back at Sixmile Airport. En route back to Sixmile Airport while flying southbound near the Birchwood Airport over the Knik Arm at about 1,200 feet and 100 knots, the engine started "sputtering" and then quit. The pilot reported he adjusted the airspeed to about 65 knots and attempted to restart the engine several times with no avail. The pilot maneuvered the airplane for a landing to runway 02L at the Birchwood Airport, and he landed in an open field about 20 feet south of the airport perimeter chain-link fence. During the landing roll, the airplane impacted the fence, the nose wheel separated, the propeller impacted terrain, and the airplane came to rest inverted in the grass, about 150 feet to the southeast of the threshold of runway 02L. The two occupants then egressed from the inverted airplane.

The airplane sustained substantial damage to both wings, the fuselage, and the empennage. The wreckage was recovered and transported to a secure location.
