On June 30, 2017, about 1105 Pacific daylight time, a Cirrus Design Corporation SR-22, N744TC, sustained substantial damage following a loss of engine power and subsequent airframe parachute deployment near Dixon, California. The private pilot and one passenger sustained minor injuries. The pilot/owner was operating the airplane under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 91. The cross-country personal flight departed San Jose, California, about 1030 with a planned destination of Reno, Nevada. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan had been filed.
The pilot reported that the oil pressure began to fluctuate, and then the engine lost power. He attempted to glide to a nearby airport, but realized that the airplane would not make it to the runway. He deployed the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS) and descended into a vineyard. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the wing assembly.
