On April 20, 2017, about 1859 Pacific daylight time, a Piper PA-22-150, N9975D, collided with terrain about a half-mile south of the Kern Valley Airport (L05), Kernville, California. The pilot/owner operated the airplane under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91, as a personal flight. The pilot and two passengers were seriously injured and the airplane sustained substantial damage. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the flight that departed L05 at an unknown time and destination.
A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector responded to the accident site and reported that the entire airplane came to rest in a confined area. During the recovery of the airplane for further examination, the FAA inspector reported no visible obvious signs of an engine malfunction.
