NTSB Factual Report

On November 19, 2006, about 1520 eastern standard time, a Cessna 172S, N53095, registered to J & L Aviation Enterprises, Inc. and operated by Epic Aviation, collapsed the nose gear during landing at the New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport, New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and no flight plan was filed for the Title 14 CFR Part 91 instructional flight. The student pilot reported no injuries and the airplane incurred substantial damage. The flight originated from the same airport, earlier that day, about 1515.

The responding FAA inspector stated the pilot of the airplane during the accident was a student pilot on his first solo landing. The student had two dual flights that day and was released for a supervised solo landing at the airport for runway 2. It was reported by witnesses, the airplane bounced twice and then nosed into the runway, resulting in a nose gear collapse and a bent propeller.

NTSB Probable Cause

The student pilot's improper recovery from a bounced landing.
