NTSB Factual Report

On November 5, 2006, about 1700 eastern standard time, an American Aviation AA-1 airplane, N5657L, registered to and operated by a private individual, as a Title 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight, incurred damage during a landing at Lakeland, Florida. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed. The private-rated pilot was not injured, and the aircraft incurred substantial damage. The flight originated from Venice, Florida, the same day, about 1415.

The pilot stated that she departed from Venice Municipal Airport, Venice, Florida, en route to Green Swamp Aerodrome, Lakeland, Florida, and while maneuvering to land she misjudged the flare, landed hard, and the airplane incurred damage. The pilot further stated that prior to the accident there were no mechanical failures or malfunctions to the airplane or any of its systems.

NTSB Probable Cause

The pilot's misjudgment of the landing flare/touchdown which resulted in a hard landing.
