NTSB Factual Report

On July 5, 2001, at 1730 central daylight time, a Cessna 182K, N2501Q, operated by a commercial pilot, bounced while landing on runway 29 (6,501 feet by 150 feet, dry concrete) at the Mattoon-Coles County Airport, Mattoon, Illinois. The pilot was not injured. The airplane received substantial damage. The 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight was being operating in visual meteorological conditions without a flight plan. The flight originated from Rockford, Illinois, exact time unknown.

The pilot reported he flared too high during the landing and the airplane bounced on the runway. The pilot noticed that the airplane's firewall was damaged while preflighting the airplane the following day.

NTSB Probable Cause

The pilot improperly flared the airplane which resulted in a hard landing.
