NTSB Factual Report

On March 12, 2002, at 1830 central standard time, a Cessna 182J, N3090F, piloted by a private pilot, sustained substantial damage when the aircraft struck a fence while taxiing at the Capital Airport, Springfield, Illinois. The airplane was being taxied to the parking area after returning from a flight when the wing struck a fence. The 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight was operating in visual meteorological conditions and was not on a flight plan. The pilot was not injured. The local flight originated at 1745.

In a written statement, the pilot said that he was taxiing on a part of the ramp that had no taxi stripes. He said that he, "...thought he was over far enough from the fence." The left wing of the airplane struck the fence causing substantial damage. In his report, the pilot listed no mechanical failures or malfunctions of the airplane.

NTSB Probable Cause

The pilot not maintaining clearance from a fence while taxiing. The fence was a factor.
