NTSB Factual Report

On October 28, 2003, at 1520 eastern daylight time, a Piper PA-28-140, N33532, was substantially damaged while landing at the Mansfield Municipal Airport (1B9), Mansfield, Massachusetts. The certificated private pilot and passenger were not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed for the personal flight, which originated at the Plymouth Municipal Airport (PYM), Plymouth, Massachusetts. The flight was conducted under 14 CFR Part 91.

According to the pilot, as the airplane was rolling out on runway 14 at Mansfield, it swerved to the right. As he pushed on the left rudder pedal to correct the situation, his foot slipped off the pedal and went underneath it. While he was attempting to place his foot back on the left pedal, the airplane traveled off the right side of the runway, and impacted a berm.

Witnesses at the airport reporting observing the airplane bounce slightly during landing, and then travel off the right side of the runway.

NTSB Probable Cause

The pilot's failure to maintain directional control while landing.
