NTSB Factual Report

On September 14, 2016 about 0910 central daylight time (CDT), a Stinson V-77, N715FB, experienced backfiring and a partial loss of engine power during cruise flight. The pilot made an emergency landing into a field near East Jordan, Minnesota. The airplane sustained substantial damage to rudder and vertical stabilizer when the airplane became inverted during the landing sequence. The airline transport-rated pilot, the sole occupant, was not injured. The airplane was privately registered and operated under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a personal flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the flight, and no flight plan was filed.
