On November 13, 2004, about 1230 central standard time, a Piper PA-28R-201T, N3464Q, piloted by a private pilot, sustained substantial damage when it taxied into a pole at the Sikeston Memorial Municipal Airport (SIK), near Sikeston, Missouri. The personal flight was operating under 14 CFR Part 91. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. No flight plan was on file. The pilot and passenger reported no injuries. The flight originated from the Greenwood Municipal Airport (HFY), near Indianapolis, Indiana, about 1030.
The pilot's accident report stated:
Departed HFY at 16:30 Zulu and landed at KSIK. Taxied
to the main ramp by the FBO, which was full. I transition
to an alternate ramp and was hugging the grass in order to
do my 90 degree turn and park. As I was doing this I
looked for tie downs and lost situational awareness. The
left wing hit a wooden pole 2 ' - 3' in from the edge.
The pilot not maintaining his visual lookout and not maintaining clearance from the pole during his taxi to park from a landing. A factor was the pole he impacted.
