NTSB Factual Report

On February 17, 2014, about 1415 central standard time, a Boeing 737-700, N23708, operating as United Airlines flight 1676, encountered severe clear air turbulence while in cruise flight at flight level 340. Of the 114 passengers and 5 crewmembers, there were 2 serious injuries, and 9 reported minor injuries which included one lap-held infant. The airplane sustained minor damage. The flight crew subsequently declared an emergency and continued for an uneventful landing at the Billings Logan International Airport (BIL), Billings, Montana. The regularly scheduled passenger flight was operating under 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 121 and originated from Denver International Airport (DEN), Denver, Colorado with BIL as the intended destination. The flight crew reported the weather was clear at the time of the event.
