NTSB Factual Report

On October 29, 2005 at 1038 eastern daylight time, a Swing Brian S, N1711Q registered to and operated by a private owner, collided with a airport sign during landing roll at Beaufort County Airport in Beaufort, South Carolina. The flight operated under provision of Title 14 CFR Part 91, personal flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident and a flight plan was not filed. The airplane was substantially damaged and the pilot was not injured. The flight originated from Beaufort County Airport on October 29, 2005 at 1000.

According to the pilot, during the landing flare the airplane landed "hard". The pilot further stated that the airplane went off the left side of runway 7 approximately 500 feet down from the approach end of runway 7, and collided with the precision approach position indicator lights. The airplane nosed over and rested inverted. Examination of the airplane revealed the fuselage was buckled and the empennage separated from the airframe. The left wing assembly sustained crush damage. The pilot did not report a mechanical problem with the airplane.

NTSB Probable Cause

The pilot's failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll which resulted in a collision with an object.
