NTSB Factual Report

On April 7, 2006, at 1200 central daylight time, a Flight Design GMBH CTSW, N122JV, registered to and operated by a private owner as a 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight, landed short of runway 18 at Bomar Field-Shelbyville Municipal Airport, Shelbyville, Tennessee. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed. The airplane was substantially damaged. The pilot and passenger were not injured. The flight originated from Marco Island Airport, Marco Island, Florida, on April 7, 2006 at 0715.

The pilot stated he departed Marco Island Airport enroute to Shelbyville, Tennessee. He encountered some weather along his route of flight and elected not to stop for fuel. Upon arrival in Shelbyville he turned on final approach to runway 18 and the engine quit. The pilot stated he flared the airplane high, and the airplane touched down hard 300 to 500 feet short of the runway.

Examination of the airplane by the FAA revealed the landing gear, bottom of the fuselage, and the firewall was damaged. The fuel tanks were not ruptured and no fuel was present in the fuel lines.

NTSB Probable Cause

The pilot's inadequate in-flight planning/decision which resulted in a total loss of engine power due to fuel exhaustion.
