NTSB Factual Report

On December 23, 2005, about 1430 central standard time, a Champion 7EC tailwheel airplane, N7592B, piloted by a student pilot, sustained substantial damage on impact with a snow bank and subsequently nosed over when the airplane departed runway 25 during landing at the Platteville Municipal Airport (PVB), near Platteville, Wisconsin. The solo instructional flight was operating under 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. No flight plan was on file. The student pilot reported sustaining minor injuries. The local flight originated from PVB at 1420.

The pilot's accident report stated:

Had perfect approach, centered on runway 25, wings level. Touched

down, plane did a little hop and then landed straight. Plane began to

swerve left - I corrected, not enough tailwheel response to get back

straight. Went off runway at intersection of 25-33 into snow. Hit

snow bank and plane nosed over and then on back.

The pilot reported no mechanical malfunctions with the airplane in reference to the flight.

NTSB Probable Cause

The student pilot not maintaining directional control during the landing. A factor was the snow bank the pilot encountered.
