NTSB Factual Report

On September 2, 3004, at 0930 central daylight time, a Piper PA-32-301, N8173J, operated by Olds Forge Flyers Inc. as a rental airplane, received substantial damage on impact with a road during an aborted landing on runway 36 (2,155 feet by 70 feet, dry asphalt) at Crivitz Municipal Airport (3D1), Crivitz, Wisconsin. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The 14 CFR Part 91 business flight was operating on an instrument rules flight plan. The airline transport pilot was uninjured. The flight originated from Gerald R. Ford International Airport Grand Rapids, Michigan, at 0800 eastern daylight time, and was en route to 3D1.

The pilot stated that he touched down, "dumped" the flaps, and made a decision that he needed to go-around. He applied full power and tried to clear the black top road at the end of the runway. He stated that the road was higher than the runway and had a 2-3 foot "build up" over the road bed. The main landing gear hit the lip on the black top. The left main landing gear separated from the airplane, and the right main landing gear was bent. He then landed at Menominee-Marinette Twin County Airport (MNM), Menominee, Michigan.

The MNM Automated Weather Observing System located approximately 19 nautical miles east of the 3D1, recorded at 0955, wind 200 degrees at 9 knots.

The Airport Facility Directory lists runway 36 as having a displaced threshold of 518 feet. A "road" is also listed under runway 36.

Examination of the accident site revealed three landing gear ground scars extending about 40 feet north of the road.

NTSB Probable Cause

The proper touchdown point not attained by the pilot during landing. The road and tailwind were contributing factors.
