NTSB description

On December 25, 2008, about 1500 eastern standard time, an amateur-built RV7A, N675RV, was substantially damaged when it impacted the ground while on approach to land at the Anson County Airport (AFP), Wadesboro, North Carolina. The certificated private pilot was fatally injured and a passenger sustained serious injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and an instrument flight rules flight plan had been filed for the flight that departed Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO), Greensboro, North Carolina, about 1420, destined for Gainesville, Florida. The personal flight was conducted under 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91.

The airplane was owned and built by the pilot.

According to a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector, the airplane was in cruise flight when the pilot reported that the airplane was experiencing engine roughness. The pilot initially informed air traffic control that he intended to return to GSO; however, he subsequently diverted to AFP, where the airplane impacted the ground about 600 feet prior to runway 16.

Damage to the airplane included, but was not limited to, both wings, and the forward portion of the fuselage. The propeller was separated from the engine.

The wreckage was recovered from the accident site and retained for further examination.

The pilot reported 1,280 hours of total flight experience, on his most recent application for an FAA third class medical certificate, which was issued on October 4, 2006.

A weather observation taken at AFP, at 1500, reported wind from 060 degrees at 3 knots, visibility 10 statute miles, sky clear; temperature 18 degrees Celsius (C), dew point 10 degrees C, altimeter 30.26 inches of mercury.
